• The property is about 50 miles south of Caen; just outside the village of Vautorte, close to the route N12, which links Mayenne with Ernee. The most convenient ferry is to Caen: the most convenient airport is Dinart, some 50 minutes from Luton.
• Vautorte is a quiet little village on the edge of the Foret Mayenne, with plenty of opportunities for country walks and picnics.
• Mayenne is a pretty town in the Department de Pays de la Loire, sandwiched between Normandy and Loire Valley. It has a 12th century castle; the huge basilica of Notre Dame des Cordeliers, which has several remarkable altar pieces of unrivalled quality. Its pretty square has several cafes and restaurants, good for a night out or a lunch-time break.
• The 11th century castle at St. Suzanne and the castle at Lassay were built during the 100 years war, as was Laval Castle.
• Megalithic monuments are visible in the countryside and Thorigneâ-en-Charnie boasts the only prehistoric cave paintings north of the Loire.
• Burial places dating as far back as 2000 B.C. can be found at La Huneâ Bazaugers and Breceâ.
• The Roman town at Jublains is laid out in the traditional grid pattern with a theatre, forum, temple and public baths â well worth a visit.
• The area of Mayenne is mainly given over to milk production and has a population density of only about 20 people per square mile, but it is within easy reach of the main centres of Paris, Le Mans, Renne and Angers.
• There are many cultural and agricultural festivals during the year under the title of â les nuits de la Mayenneâ adding to the charm of the area.
