Friends For Life was born in 2006 when two families, one Muslim, the other Jewish, met and became best of friends. Both thought, ‘If we can do this, why can’t everybody?’

Andy Gilbert, a long standing musician and show producer came up with the idea of a multi-cultural show. The idea took off, and Friends For Life was born. Meetings were held by a small group comprising of two Jews, two Muslims, and a Christian charity worker of many years experience.

The show soon turned into a festival, and July 2007 saw the first Friends For Life Multi Cultural festival at Lovat Hall, Newport Pagnell. The large hall accommodated stalls selling clothes, food and Fairtrade goods from around the world.

The ten act sell-out show, which was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Milton Keynes, brought together top quality Latin American, Black Gospel, Tamil, Bollywood, Jewish, Christian, and Sikh singers, musicians and dancers. It was considered by all who attended to be an outstandingly successful first event, and left all concerned asking, ‘What next?’

It was followed up by two well attended ‘Bring-and-share’ suppers. People brought food and drink representative of their cultures, put them on the large table, and everybody then had the opportunity to sample each others’ cuisine. A cabaret was provided by singers and musicians, bringing an evening of social enrichment to a dramatic climax.
